Paul Martin was on the defensive during the
2004 election campaign over his $9 billion
prescription to save medicare after several
premiers, health care professionals and
opposition leaders harshly criticized his plan.
Less than a week before the unveiling federal
health care promises, Premier Dalton McGuinty
shocked Ontarians when it announced in its first
budget that taxpayers would be paying a health
care premium. McGuinty clearly broke a promise
during the 2003 provincial election that Liberals
would not raise taxes if elected to power.
Paul Martin lashed out at Mr. McGuinty saying
he would not have reneged on a promise of no
tax hikes and furthermore declined to say
whether he would be seen in public with the
Ontario premier during the federal election
campaign.
