Jean Chretien and Paul Martin built
an acceptable working relationship
together for nearly 10 years. It was
Martin who convinced Chretien that
the Liberal government must
embark on a relentless campaign to
eliminate the deficit or the countryâ
€™s finances would soon be in a
catastrophic state. After a
succession of severe budgets,
Martin succeeded in slaying the
deficit dragon. Since then, the
federal government, thanks no
doubt to the sustained bull
economy, has been enjoying
whopping budget surpluses and is
on target to wipe out its debt entirely
within the foreseeable future.
