Joe Clark created a firestorm of controversy when, during an interview a week before voters went to the polls in 2004, was pressed to choose between Martin and Harper as the nation's leader. Clark chose Martin, saying it's better to go with the devil you know.
Canadians, it seemed, agreed with the former Prime Minister and leader of the now defunct Progressive Conservative Party, by electing enough Liberals to form a minority government.
The new Conservative Party, only months old, had not yet had a formal Policy conference so the accusation that the leadership and backroom strategists held a "hidden agenda" seemed to hold quite a bit of truth.
