It was just a single line among 20 pages, but local history lovers are celebrating the mention of the War of 1812 in the government's throne speech.

It's hoped that high-profile exposure will translate into funding to mark the 200th anniversary.

Yesterday's budget outlined $2 million for community war memorial projects but contained no specifics.

Hamilton has set aside $50,000 to promote, brand and plan the event. A consultant was hired to develop an organizational framework and strategic plan.

That work is under way and will ramp up in the months to come.

Anna Bradford, director of culture for Hamilton, says the city will apply for any funding programs as soon as they're announced.

"I think the fact it was in the throne speech is already setting the tone for it," she said.

The Ontario Ministry of Tourism has said the bicentennial will be a major event for Ontario, with close to 13 million Americans and Canadians saying they will consider attending events.

Of course, locally, the key date is June 6, 1813, when British forces launched a surprise night attack on American troops in Stoney Creek.
