Contract talks between the Hamilton Street Railway and Local 107 of the Amalgamated Transit Union resumed yesterday and continued through the evening.

Neither side is saying much about the talks which are expected to continue today. However, Budh Dhillon, Local 107's president, said the union has been garnering "favourable" and sympathetic response to its website highlighting the problems drivers have finding a place to use a washroom.

The website -- www.gimeabreak- hsr.ca -- outlines the drivers' concerns about having few places to go when the need arises. The website has plenty of warnings about content some may find objectionable.

"We've had a great response," Dhillon said last night, adding visitors to the site can also listen to radio commercials airing on local stations outlining the drivers' desire for more restrooms. The HSR has an arrangement for drivers to use the facilities at a downtown cafe but the union says the problem is that place is not open early in the morning or late at night.

On Oct. 18, 509 of the 610 members of Local 107 voted 94.5 per cent to reject the latest HSR offer. No date has been set for a strike. Previous talks broke off Oct. 9. Source...
