Have our MPs lost their minds? We face serious issues on all sides -- the war in Afghanistan, climate change, health care, First Nations' dismal living conditions, RCMP mismanagement, the gap between rich and poor, our weak productivity and on and on.
Yet Parliament is fretting about whether the Phoenix Coyotes' Shane Doan should be the captain of Canada's world championship hockey team. MPs actually debated the issue and all four parties supported a motion to summon Hockey Canada officials to a Commons committee meeting next week to explain the choice.
Doan, an Alberta-born right-winger, is under an unfair cloud. He was accused in 2005 of criticizing the officiating during game by referring to "deleted French." He denied the charge; the NHL cleared him.
No one who knows him is surprised. Doan is one of sports' truly decent people -- religious, hard-working, admired. His parents run the Circle Square Christian ranch for children, which teaches the need for respect. He's giving up his own time to represent Canada at the world championships. And he doesn't swear.
And now he's the victim of a smear campaign by people like NDP Leader Jack Layton and MPs from all parties. Source...
