High from a weekend that saw him take a firm lead in the Liberal leadership race, Michael Ignatieff said he believes his campaign has established a solid "base" for victory in December.

"If we're going to build a national party we have to have strength right across, from coast to coast to coast; we have to have strength with all age groups; and we have to have strength in both languages," Ignatieff told reporters in Toronto on Monday.

"So I feel our campaign has got now the base to consolidate and move to victory at the (December Liberal leadership) convention. And the convention is going to be extremely exciting."

The Liberal race has effectively split in two, with four serious contenders emerging and four others who trail badly in delegate support.

While the official totals won't be available until early this coming week, it appears presumed frontrunner Ignatieff can now call himself the actual frontrunner. More...
