Like clockwork, every four years the American public draws the line in the sand, prepares the two sets of arguments and only then can the never-ending debate begin.
Feeling political? Well, that's one way to describe the reaction fans have to the World Cup. Two sides, both passionate in their values and beliefs -- with everyone else in between trying not to rock the boat, convinced their single vote won't affect the outcome.
Let's be straight: the hubbub over the World Cup's place in the sports hierarchy of America has nothing to do with the actual game of soccer. Instead, it has everything to do with arrogance, aesthetics and apathy.
Soccer easily is the most popular sport in the world. It's hard to shoot down that point. In the U.S., however, baseball is deemed the National Pastime, while the true top dog is football. (To avoid confusion, that would be the game where you wear helmets and can touch the ball with your hands.)
Until the U.S. builds a winner, a significant chunk of the population will write off the World Cup, Major League Soccer, etc. Source.
