Michaelle Jean moves into Rideau Hall after a swearing in ceremony in the Senate Chamber.

The outgoing governor general said in a speech on Parliament Hill on Monday that it's not the person but the institution that makes the role of governor general so important.

Clarkson will be the first governor general to attend a successor's investiture in over 100 years. Clarkson even hosted a number of special ceremonies at Rideau Hall the day before she was to pass the torch to Jean.

Clarkson and her husband John Ralston Saul will reportedly hop into a new car near Parliament Hill and drive to Toronto after Jean is sworn in.

Clarkson has served as the Queen's representative in Canada for six years.

Jean will become one of Canada's youngest governor generals when she takes over from Clarkson Tuesday.

The former Quebec journalist announced on Sunday that she had renounced her French citizenship because she said she wouldn't feel comfortable as the commander-in-chief of the Canadian Forces while still a French citizen.
