WASHINGTON — President Bush spent Tuesday in a series of meetings aimed at making sure the resources of the federal government are focused on the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort.

He met with his Cabinet, education officials, congressional leaders and the heads of charities involved in the recovery.

"Bureaucracy is not going to stand in the way of getting the job done for the people," Bush said.

Bush and his administration continue to be criticized for what many see as a slow and inadequate federal response to the storm that ravaged three states and flooded the city of New Orleans.

"We're a week behind where we should be in responding to Katrina," House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said after meeting with Bush at the White House.

Tuesday's meetings came the day after Bush's Labor Day visit to the disaster region, his second visit in four days. Bush said he will send Vice President Cheney and first lady Laura Bush to the region Thursday.
