Doctors treating the Ukrainian opposition leader, Viktor Yushchenko, said yesterday that they expected to be able to identify the type of dioxin poison that caused his disabling illness and facial disfigurement today or tomorrow.
Mr Yushchenko fell seriously ill on September 5 with a complaint that nearly cost him his life, caused severe lesions on his face, and kept him out of campaigning for the presidential elections for three weeks.
On Saturday, doctors confirmed he had been poisoned. Weeks into the illness, Mr Yushchenko accused the Ukrainian government of trying to kill him.
Michael Zimpfer, the president of the Rudolfinerhaus clinic in Vienna where Mr Yushchenko has been treated, told the Guardian that a team of experts would complete their analysis of the substance found in Mr Yushchenko's bloodstream as early as today.
Further analysis would establish more precisely when Mr Yushchenko had ingested the poison, he said. Mr Yushchenko fell ill immediately after a dinner with the head of the Ukrainian security service. It is not clear whether he ingested the poison during this meal or earlier in the week.
