Industrial north Hamilton has maintained its place among the highest
polluters in Ontario.
But it trails rural Haldimand and Norfolk for bragging rights
as the worst local source of air contaminants, particulate matter
and water pollution.
The third annual report of environmental watchdog PollutionWatch says industries
are pumping out millions of kilograms of pollutants. In 2002,
the most recent year for which figures are available, north
Hamilton saw 43,708,758 kilograms coming out of smokestacks.
The L8L postal code -- the eastern half that includes
Dofasco -- was responsible for 27,551,614 kilos. L8H -- which
is home to Stelco -- produced 16,157,143 kilos.
Combined, they were the fifth-worst polluter in Ontario.
But that pales before the Hagersville area (N0A) with the
coal-fired Nanticoke power generating station and Stelco's Lake Erie works.
That region was Ontario's No. 2 polluter with emissions of
174,103,533 kilograms.
Sudbury topped the list with more than 305 million kilos.
The report uses emission figures released to Environment Canada by
industry to reach its findings. That material causes smog and
is linked to asthma, bronchitis and heart disease. Source.
