Historic Health Deal Achieved
OTTAWA—Prime Minister Paul Martin and the premiers today signed an $18-billion six-year health-care agreement.

"The premiers have agreed on a plan for better health care for all Canadians," Martin said early this morning.

"It will kickstart a reduction in waiting time all across the country. It will improve access to health care professionals so Canadians can see a doctor when they need to and where they need to. It will result in expansion of home care services across the country and better pharmacare coverage."

Just after midnight, the leaders filed into the meeting room at the conference centre following a marathon day of negotiations spent behind closed doors.

Martin, who had promised "a fix for a generation" on health care in the past election, entered the room beaming, and shook each premier's hand starting with Ontario's Dalton McGuinty.

Some of the new money will begin to flow right away to ease pressures on the country's ailing health-care system. Source.
