The Ontario government has given the Royal Botanical Gardens a
$1.87 million lifeline and a strong warning to get its
financial house in order.
Minister of Culture Madeleine Meilleur delivered the one-time bailout yesterday
and told the board to bolster its financial controls and
review its strategies.
"This funding comes with the understanding that the RBG will
make significant enhancements to its financial systems and controls," she
said.
The minister made no promises for future help.
Nor would she discuss the contents of a consultant's report
her ministry commissioned, which outlines what went wrong at the
Royal Botanical Gardens and what should be done to fix
it.
"We are not here to point fingers," she said.
The ministry has "full confidence the RBG will put the
necessary financial controls in place," she said.
RBG board chair Grant Walsh said that the board received
the report a half-hour before the minister's announcement and would
have to study it before making a decision whether to
release its contents. Source.
