We know that Dudley George and his fellow aboriginal protesters
were unarmed when George was gunned down by police at
Ipperwash Provincial Park in the late summer of 1995.
And we know the ugly incident led to disturbing claims
against then-premier Mike Harris. Did the leader of Ontario's new
law-and-order Conservative government quietly direct the OPP to get in
there and clear those troublesome protesters out of the abandoned
campground, which was also a sacred native burial ground?
Harris and his inner circle, elected and otherwise, have always
denied ordering the raid, although damning documents from a top-level
government meeting just hours before the incident are, at best,
unsettling.
Unfortunately, we've never been allowed to know if the accusations
are true or false. Harris, and his successor Ernie Eves,
steadfastly dismissed pleas from the Opposition and from the family
of Dudley George to hold an independent inquiry which could
examine who did what. And that has been unacceptable.
So it's an understatement to say this week's arrival of
the long-awaited judicial inquiry into the Ipperwash tragedy will be
welcomed by anyone who believes that transparency of government is
important. Source.
