To a degree greater than in any recent federal election campaign, Canadians are angry and disillusioned with politicians, and are finding it difficult to put their faith in any party. If the promises of the politicians were looked at with skepticism in the past, they are now received with disdain.
In no small measure the flip-flopping of Premier Dalton McGuinty on his campaign commitments is responsible for this pervasive cynicism. An opinion poll released this week puts the personal approval rating for McGuinty as leader at an astonishing 9%. It is doubtful any Premier in this country has suffered such an embarrassing result so early in his mandate. McGuinty counted on the electorate accepting that it was okay to break promises because the previous government had fibbed about the state of the province's finances.
This was a severe miscalculation. His condescending 'don't worry, you'll understand later' approach has many taxpayers seething.
