Paul Martin will kick-off a federal election campaign this weekend with a new poll showing the Liberals are heading for the first minority government in Canada since 1979.

A COMPAS Survey shows Stephen Harper and the Conservatives have closed the gap on the Liberals.

Martin and the Grits have the support of 39 per cent of decided voters, compared to 31 per cent for the Tories.

N-D-P support is 17 per cent, and the Bloc Quebecois is at 11 per cent.

COMPAS says Harper has benefited from the fallout of Tuesday's Ontario budget -- which saw the provincial Liberals impose health care premiums and higher taxes on Ontarians. An Ipsos-Reid poll released on Thursday showed the Liberals had 39 per cent support, compared to 26 for the Conservatives.

Compared with the last COMPAS survey at the start of this month, the Liberals broke even, the Tories are up four percentage points, the N-D-P is down three percentage points, and the Bloc slipped one percentage point. Source.
