With official party status and $1 million in funding on the line, the New Democrats hope city councillor Andrea Horwath's reputation will provide the boost to take the Hamilton East byelection. Horwath, 41, accepted the nomination yesterday.
"This is an important election for us but most of all it's an important election for the people of Hamilton East and the people of Ontario," NDP leader Howard Hampton told about 250 party members yesterday at the United Steelworkers Centre.
Former Hamilton East MPP Bob Mackenzie, Niagara Centre MPP Peter Kormos, and David Christopherson, the federal candidate for Hamilton Centre, were on hand.
Hampton said he'll be in Hamilton on an almost daily basis during the campaign, fighting for the seat the NDP has held during most of the last five decades.
"The people in Hamilton East need someone who's going to fight for the interests of Hamilton East, not someone who's simply going to apologize every time Dalton McGuinty breaks another promise," Hampton said of Horwath.
