It looks as if Hamilton's demand for a multimillion-dollar bailout
from the province to help balance the city's books is going to pay off.
A well-placed source says Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty phoned Mayor Larry Di Ianni yesterday to say he knows the city needs financial help and he wants to fix the problem.
The source couldn't confirm what the amount will be, but the city has been looking for $19.5 million from McGuinty.
"The premier knows how much we want," the source said.
Di Ianni confirmed the call from McGuinty, but refused to divulge details, underlining the delicacy of the discussions.
"I said I'd keep the details of the conversation private because he wants it that way," Di Ianni said.
"I know the province wants to do right by us. What that means will unfold in time."
Audrey Gouskos, spokesperson for McGuinty, also hinted that financial help is coming.
