Saying she is not a "whiner," Sheila Copps is officially asking the Liberal party to hold another nomination meeting in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek because of allegations of widespread irregularities.

And if that should happen she wants Elections Canada to run it, saying her own party can't be trusted to be an independent arbiter.

But Jean-Pierre Kingsley, Canada's chief electoral officer, said Monday he's not sure Elections Canada has the authority to restage the meeting.

"This decision to appeal has not been an easy one ... I have been a long and loyal member of the Liberal party," she said after announcing yesterday that she had launched an appeal of Saturday's vote.

"For those who want to call me or say that I am a whiner ... I lost an election once by 14 votes and I never attacked my opponent," Copps said, referring to the time she ran for MPP in 1977 and lost by a mere 14 votes in Hamilton.

Copps, a 20-year veteran of the federal Liberal caucus, lost the nomination for the newly formed riding to Transport Minister Tony Valeri. Source.
