Di Ianni New Mayor
Larry Di Ianni, the new mayor of Hamilton, says voters have spoken loudly in favour of completing the Red Hill Creek Expressway.

The veteran Stoney Creek councillor defeated former Hamilton West NDP MPP David Christopherson by a margin of roughly 16,000 votes to become the city's first Italian-Canadian mayor.

In doing so, Di Ianni says, "The people of Hamilton, through their votes, have spoken clearly, should anyone have had any doubt and I don't think they should."

As the voters picked another suburban candidate to succeed Bob Wade of Ancaster, they also appear to have closed the door on deamalgamation.

Dick Wildeman, who led a deamalgamation slate, emerged with just over 3 per cent of the vote and only one of his supporters, Ward 14 councillor Dave Braden, was elected.

About 38 per cent of the 366,798 eligible voters cast ballots. Di Ianni took 51 per cent of the mayoralty vote and Christopherson 39 per cent. The turnout in 2000 was 43 per cent.

Christopherson showed up first at City Hall to concede last night, blaming the loss on his opposition to the expressway and Di Ianni's bigger campaign budget, but called on everyone in the city to back the new mayor. Source.
