A mayoral candidate says one of his opponents wants him
to drop out of the race to avoid splitting suburban
votes. -- But Dick Wildeman won't name the opponent.
He claims one of his volunteers was approached by the
person at the Rockton fair last week.
"It might be a concern in wards nine to 15
where a lot of voters are pro-deamalgamation," Wildeman said. "They
might vote for me."
Observers believe Wildeman might take votes from Larry Di Ianni,
the Stoney Creek councillor expected to draw a lot of
suburban support. If that vote is split, mayoral candidate David
Christopherson could come up the middle and win. Wildeman doesn't intend to pursue the issue.
Di Ianni attended the Rockton fair but said he doesn't
"have any recollection of that specific conversation."
But he said vote-splitting in the suburbs is a concern
for his campaign. A vote for Wildeman to protest amalgamation
would be counterproductive, he said.
"That's a vote for Christopherson," Di Ianni said. "Splitting the
vote is not to their advantage."
Christopherson said he made no such comment to any Wildeman
volunteer. He said he welcomes Wildeman in the mayoral race.
