Mayor Bob Wade says he's afraid a backlash by Red
Hill Creek Expressway supporters might lead to violence on the
picket line where protesters are blocking construction.
The pickets stress their protest is peaceful, but Wade says
he fears people on the other side "might take things
into their own hands, and I don't want it to
reach that."
The mayor says that's one reason to quickly end the
standoff and let Dufferin Construction start building a bridge to
carry Greenhill Avenue over the expressway route.
In a memo issued early yesterday, Wade said lawyers for
the city were getting ready to go to court to
force an end to the blockade. In an interview later,
he said the city would seek an order to limit
picketing early next week.
Wade said city council has repeatedly voted to build the
expressway and wants no further delay. He said he has
been silent on the issue in recent days only because
he feels it's up to staff to manage the $200-million
project now that council has issued instructions. Source.
