With the 2010 Winter Olympic jewel in Canada's sporting crown
after yesterday's nail-biting win in Prague, the nation's sporting attention
turns to winning the Commonwealth Games for Hamilton in 2010.
"This is tremendous news. It's a sweet win when it's
filled with as much pressure as this one was," said
Secretary for Sport Paul Devillers.
"Now we've got the next one in November (for the
Commonwealth vote) and we'll be focusing on that."
And, boy, was yesterday's Olympic decision close. Pyeongchang had 51
votes to Vancouver's 40 and Salzburg's 16 on the first
ballot.
If three more voted for South Korea then, it was
all over for Canada. But it looks like those Salzburg
votes swung over to Vancouver on the second ballot, providing
a 56-53 win.
No matter the vote, it was a victory for Canada,
stressed Heritage Minister Sheila Copps.
Copps said the result shows the power of the community
and business working to one end.
While about 10,000 anxious Vancouverites at GM Place erupted in
joy at the prospect of the good times through the
Olympics, DeVillers was thinking ahead to the kind of improvements
which these Games, and the potential of the Commonwealth Games,
would bring to Canadian athletes. Source.
