OTTAWA (Don Martin -- National Post) - While off drafting what will surely be the winning squad in my office hockey pool for the second year in a row, the defacing of Saddam Hussein's Iraq claimed his prized statue in downtown Baghdad.
Even worse, the Iraqis were whacking the base of Saddam's 65th birthday trophy with slippers. I gather this is the ultimate cultural insult, with or without foot odour.
Three hours later in the House of Commons, the knee-jerking Canadian Alliance declared the 21-day war in Iraq over, pushed for the expulsion of the Iraqi ambassador, demanded the Prime Minister congratulate the victorious coalition and urged Canada to get in on the rebuilding program.
On television, meanwhile, the liberated Iraqis were looting and the almost annihilated residents celebrated their salvation with a convincing display of anarchy.
Amid scenes of such celebration and chaos, Jean Chrétien, the Prime Minister, called a rare late afternoon news conference. He just wanted to wish the press gallery a Happy Easter and see if we had any questions. Honest.
