Count Australia among the friends of America.
"The government has authorized the chief of the Australian Defense Force to place the Australian forces already deployed in the Gulf region as part of any U.S.-led coalition operation that may take place in the future," Prime Minister John Howard, a winner, said yesterday.
And despite losing a Cabinet member - former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, who resigned in protest - Britain's profile-in-courage Prime Minister Tony Blair, a winner, stood firm. "The threatened French veto set back hugely the considerable progress we were making in building consensus," Blair said. "I passionately believe that if the international community had stayed rock solid . . . Saddam could have finally been disarmed without a shot being fired." But when the chips go down, the weasels show their colors, too.
Said Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien: "If military action proceeds without a new resolution of the Security Council, Canada will not participate."
It's sad when friends part - but this one is on Chretien, a weasel.
