Paul Martin bowed to opposition pressure Tuesday and announced he's giving up control of his multimillion-dollar shipping business to avoid further conflict of interest allegations.
As he campaigns to become the next Liberal leader and prime minister, Martin announced plans to dispose of all his voting shares in Canada Steamship Lines by transferring them to his adult sons. "The bottom line is that I will completely sever all ties with Canada Steamship Lines," said Martin, front-runner to replace retiring Prime Minister Jean Chretien. But the announcement failed to quell complaints that, because his shipping empire remains in family hands, Martin isn't really out of the picture.
"In theory, you can sever all ties, but are we all really going to believe that you can genuinely sever all business ties with your own son?" asked Canadian Alliance Leader Stephen Harper.
"It's not going to take any steam out of our pursuit of him," Harper added from Calgary.
For weeks, Martin insisted he wouldn't sell the company he helped build into a world leader in shipping.
