Dressed in a flag-red blazer and flanked by supporters including young people and women, Sheila Copps launched her official bid for the Liberal leadership Thursday at a Tim Hortons in her hometown of Hamilton.
Ms. Copps's announcement at "Tim's" — a restaurant that has become one of Canada's icons — is part of her effort to reach out to the grassroots of the Liberal party and to ordinary Canadians.
The Heritage Minister's method of announcing her candidacy was clearly an attempt by Ms. Copps to differentiate herself from the other two, more right-of-centre candidates — Finance Minister John Manley and former finance minister Paul Martin, expected to announce they are running in upcoming weeks.
"I will run a campaign of enthusiasm of inclusion a campaign of ideas and especially a campaign of ideals," Ms. Copps told her cheering supporters.
Ms. Copps is the first official candidate in the race to replace outgoing Liberal Leader Jean Chrétien, who will step down in February 2004.
