Scrap-metal baron turned philanthropist Joey Tanenbaum renewed his Hamilton links
yesterday with what some call the most significant gift ever
to the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
The AGH is poised to become a centre for the
study of 19th century European art after Tanenbaum and wife
Toby gave 211 works they spent decades collecting.
While not the largest gift to the AGH -- Bert
and Barbara Stitt once gave 340 works -- it boosts
the gallery's slim European holdings with 110 important, but little-known,
underdogs of art history.
Meanwhile, Mayor Wade is in Cape Town, South Africa, for
a meeting of the executive board of the Commonwealth Games
Federation. He, along with Sheila Copps, will help make a pitch to the board
about Hamilton's bid for the 2010 Games.
Wade
won't head back to Canada until Feb. 16. He plans
several days of self-paid sightseeing with his wife Ida.
