The proposed garbage rules, which could go into effect this
spring, are expected to lower collection costs by $615,000 in
the 2003 budget.
The reduction would be achieved through a user fee for
picking up items such as appliances that contain CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons)
and fewer pickups of bulk items and yard waste.
The city's committee of the whole meets tomorrow to vote
on the recommendations.
If endorsed, they must be ratified at Wednesday's city council
meeting.
The proposed garbage collection changes include:
* Beginning March 31, residents living in single-family homes will
be asked to put out only three garbage bags a
week. The reduction would be voluntary and the city doesn't
plan to charge for extra bags.
A media campaign starting in the spring would stress the
importance of reducing garbage.
* The number of times bulk items are picked up
would drop to three a year from six. A $20
surcharge would be levied on each item containing CFCs.
* Leaf and yard waste would be picked up 11
times a year instead of 16. Source.
