This urban, working-class riding of Hamilton East has long had
a left-leaning bent. From 1955 to 1995, it was held
by the NDP and by its predecessor the CCF (Co-operative
Commonwealth Federation). MPP Bob Mackenzie held the seat between 1975
and 1995. And in what seemed like a natural fit
to many, he was labour minister in the Bob Rae
government. The NDP got swept away with the arrival of
Dominic Agostino in 1995. The city councillor took the seat
with the help of the Liberal party machine, which controls
the federal sister riding for MP and Heritage Minister Sheila
Copps. Agostino recaptured the seat in 1999, with more votes
than his two main challengers put together.
Sam Merulla may be newish to the city hall but he is
not new to politics. The PATH Employment Services co-ordinator has
been a political person for 20 of his 33 years
and ran in Ward 3 last time. He's the president
of the Hamilton East federal Liberals (Sheila Copps's territory). He
held two jobs with Hamilton East MPP Dominic Agostino and
is a vice-president of the Ontario Liberals. And, like Copps
and Agostino, he has a nose for news.
