Could a floating casino be in the cards for Hamilton's
harbour?
That's the dream of Councillor Sam Merulla. He envisions a
cruise ship-style experience, with high-class entertainment and fine dining, and
the proceeds going to the city.
The ship could pick up passengers from Toronto to Niagara,
and give Hamilton another stake in the lucrative gaming industry.
The city receives a percentage of revenues from slot machines
at Flamboro Downs.
"The bigger the better," said Merulla, describing the proposed floating
casino.
"Something that would be an attraction from a tourist standpoint,
and really make it world-renowned."
The Ward 4 councillor said revenue from such a venture
could revitalize Hamilton in the same manner that Casino Niagara
has boosted the fortunes of Niagara Falls.
"It ties into our strategic plan on many fronts ...
economic development, tourism, downtown revitalization and waterfront redevelopment."
Merulla thinks people already willing to drive to Casino Rama
and Niagara Falls would be eager for the new experience
of a floating casino closer to home.
