A former aide to Mike Harris says the retired Ontario premier is heartened by Canadian Alliance Leader Stephen Harper's recent efforts to unite the political right and hasn't ruled out running federally.
"Mike found Mr. Harper's comments on trying to bring the two parties together encouraging because it's consistent with his belief that we need (a) unified party," the former aide, who didn't want to be identified, said yesterday.
On Tuesday, shortly after federal Conservative Leader Joe Clark announced his intention to resign, Harper suggested holding a joint leadership race involving his party and Clark's.
Harris, an outspoken critic of the federal government, wants to see a strong alternative to the Liberals, the former aide said, but believes that will be difficult unless the Canadian Alliance and the Conservatives can come together. Source.
