Women could be working on Canadian navy submarines for the
first time next year after the military dropped its last
gender barrier.
Master Seaman Sophie Macarthur was one of the women celebrating
yesterday. She's thinking about applying for a move from a
patrol frigate to a sub.
"It's definitely going to take some getting used to by
the men, for sure. This has been their last bastion
of the man's club," Macarthur said from Halifax.
The 29-year-old said she's not overly concerned about privacy issues
aboard a cramped submarine -- even though it would mean
sharing sleeping quarters with men.
"Probably the biggest concern about sleeping in the same space
as a bunch of men is snoring, I'm a pretty
light sleeper," she said. "As long as they give me
somewhere to change and I can shower by myself, I'm
happy."
Macarthur said she hasn't run into any serious problems aboard
ships and expects men on subs will get used to
working with women pretty quickly.
"If there's only serious women applying for it, the men
will get to understand that even though there are women,
they're there to work." Source.
