The cartoon was a prophecy of things to come in the election campaign.

Prime Minister Paul Martin called an election that would end after a rather lengthy 58 day campaign. With the Christmas Holidays in the middle of the campaign it was generally accepted that real public attention wouldn't happen until the New Year.

When the polls began to dive for the party in early January, Liberals repeated the tactic of the 2004 election of portraying Stephen Harper as scary and the Conservatives of hiding a secret agenda.

The release of movie King Kong in the midst of the campaign made for dandy editorial cartoon parallels.
